Creating automobiles uses up quite a bit of electricity. However, Honda is dedicated to reducing carbon emissions by building hybrid vehicles like the 2020 Honda Insight and 2020 Honda Accord. To enforce this mission, Honda recently announced that it has entered into several long-term virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs) for renewable wind and solar power. This type of power will cover more than 60% of the electricity that Honda uses in North America, vastly reducing its carbon footprint.
Globally, Honda leads the way in finding ways to reduce emissions while building new cars. By purchasing 320 megawatts (MW) of wind and solar power from North American wind farms, Honda can save over 1 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable electricity annually, offsetting its emissions. The number of emissions offset is roughly equal to 100,000 American households’ everyday energy usage. This contract is the largest renewable energy procurement commitment for an automaker, helping Honda dealerships in Ohio, Indiana, and Alabama to reduce their environmental impact.
By purchasing wind power, Honda continues to move towards its global goal of reducing emissions by 50% by 2050. The company has worked towards this goal since 2000, and as part of this objective, the company also aims for two-thirds of its global sales to be electrified vehicles by 2030.
